A masterpiece of experimental musical theater, now on collectible vinyl

Enter the dark, cathartic, and deeply human universe of The Holy Gasp, an exclusive artist of Plétora Network in Mexico, with their conceptual album "The Love Songs of Oedipus Rex" . Independently released on September 7, 2018 and officially distributed in Mexico by Plétora Network, this 12" black vinyl is an essential collector's piece.

About the album:

Recorded by Dale Morningstar on Toronto Island and mixed by Craig Saltz, this massive project features 27 musicians and vocalists. The 13 songs narrate, with dark humor and theatricality, the story of a marriage in crisis, compounded by the death of the husband's father and the death of his therapist. The lyrics are based on personal experiences of leader Benjamin Hackman, who channeled his grief after the passing of his father and his therapist amid a painful divorce.

Achievements and recognition:

  • #1 on Earshot Campus radio charts in Windsor and Detroit
  • Subject of a CBC ShortDoc by director Luke Sargent about the process of turning trauma into art
  • Premiere concert at 918 Bathurst, Toronto (October 27, 2018)

Critical reception:

  • Sacred Exile: "An immediately captivating genre blend... ultimately like nothing you've heard before"
  • Dominionated: "From the most painful and precarious situation, it emerges as a creative masterpiece"

Funding:

  • Ontario Arts Council
  • Canada Council for the Arts
  • FACTOR
  • Toronto Arts Council (for the premiere concert)
